This position is responsible for the development and management of effective, efficient and comprehensive leadership and organizational development programs for the Iowa Corn Promotion Board (ICPB) and Iowa Corn Growers Association (ICGA). The position will support the boards, committees, staff and grassroots organization at all levels in developing and delivering relevant development programs.  The director also effectively directs the Association’s I-LEAD (Iowa Corn Leadership Enhancement and Development Program) and CAT (Iowa Corn Collegiate Advisory Team) programs. This position coordinates actively with the Director of Growers Services and is directed by the COO and CEO to perform additional duties or tasks to support the Iowa Corn Grower’s mission.

Essential Position Accountabilities:

  1. Development Programs: Directs I-LEAD and CAT agricultural leadership development/education programs (including but not limited to recruitment, class selection, program design and delivery). Serves as the primary contact and liaison with class members, graduates, program supporters, internal staff and external promotion.
  2. Leadership Development: Develops and delivers comprehensive leadership development materials and programs for Iowa Corn that are aligned with the strategic plan. Responsible for training and coaching participants from various agricultural backgrounds including farmers as well as industry professionals.
    • Develops and facilitates a three-year leadership development plan and schedule for each functional area of the Iowa Corn organization. The plan should be aligned closely with the organization’s strategic plan.
    • Identify, organize, and utilize third-part resources (individuals and programs) that can support the internal training program and coordinates the seamless integration of these resources into the comprehensive Iowa Corn leadership development program.
    • Develops and implements organizational development programs that support the work requirements of all staff including the Management Team as well as individual staff functional departments.
  3. Internal Support: Develops and implements training programs, in coordination with the Director of Grower Services, that support the grassroots structure including the local and district boards, managing development programs that support ICGA membership recruiting and retention efforts, as well as ICPB checkoff outreach programs.  Develops and implements training programs in coordination with the Director of Government Relations that enhance and support ICGA policy development at all levels in the Iowa Corn organization.
  4. Training: Identifies overall organizational needs and develops and implements development programs that support the work of the State Boards and Committees of Iowa Corn including, but not limited to, developing others and teams, media training, behavioral and emotional intelligence assessments, business etiquette, meeting facilitation and customer service programs.  Builds leadership capacity of farmer leaders and improves organization strength of these leaders through resources, coaching, training, and other tactics.
  5. Outreach: Responsible for developing and building strong professional relationships working with external education and leadership programs that Iowa Corn supports including, but not limited to, Future Famers of American (FFA), 4-H, Iowa Foundation for Agricultural Advancement (IFAA), Iowa Agricultural Literacy Foundation (IALF), Iowa Postsecondary Agricultural Student Organization (PAS) and Agriculture Future of America (AFA).
  6. Administrative: Coordinates overall Iowa Corn Intern program and directly supervises Grower Services and Leadership Development Intern.  Responsible as staff coordinator for leading the planning of the Annual Grassroots Summit. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: organizing planning committee meetings, designing the agenda with input from leaders and staff, booking speakers, and ensuring all planning aspects are on time and within budget.

Required Skills and Experience: 

Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree in a related field from a four-year college or university.   A Master’s degree is a plus.   A minimum of ten years’ related experience is required either in private enterprise or the non-profit sector.  Understanding of agricultural socio-economic and environmental issues is necessary.   Knowledge of commodity organizations would be a plus including membership programs, legislative issues, etc.  Travel experience and knowledge of world and national agricultural issues and experience working with volunteers and grass roots programs would be a plus.
