DISTRICT FIELD MANAGER – DISTRICT 5 – IOWA CORN

General Description

The Iowa Corn District Field Managers are responsible for executing the membership plan and the grassroots outreach and development efforts of Iowa Corn.  The Iowa Corn District Field Managers strive to involve more individuals in corn-industry leadership and advocacy, and engage them in the issues that are critical to the interests of Iowa corn growers.  The District Field Managers also work to achieve increased understanding of and support for the work of the Iowa Corn Promotion Board.  This position reports to the Director of Grower Services.

Iowa Corn District 5 is in central Iowa and includes Boone, Dallas, Grundy, Hamilton, Hardin, Jasper, Marshall, Marion, Polk, Poweshiek, Story, Tama, Warren, and Webster counties.

Specific Job Description

Checkoff education and awareness – Iowa Corn District Field Managers:

  • Participate in a sustained effort to increase the awareness of the value of the Iowa corn checkoff program with checkoff contributors in all of their assigned counties, particularly in areas where the checkoff is facing unusual local pressures
  • Serve as liaisons to elevators and other first purchasers of corn
  • Coordinate joint educational and promotional activities with other organizations

Membership Activities – District Field Managers work with the ICGA Director of Grower Services to carry out membership activities for ICGA.  These activities include:

  • Training and providing support to local leaders and recruiters to help them communicate the benefits of ICGA membership
  • Manage, identify, train, and motivate new recruiters
  • Motivating local leaders and members to attend annual policy meetings, ICGA legislative events, roundtables, crop fairs, and local leader events.
  • Providing associate members with the information and encouragement they need to be more effective ambassadors for Iowa Corn.
  • Encouraging contacts to become ICGA members.
  • Helping facilitate various member activities during the year, including member hospitality tents and participation Cy-Hawk Series events, the Iowa State Fair, and other events. 

Local/district/state organization support – The District Field Managers assist the ICGA Director of Grower Services in strengthening the state, district and local organizations by:

  • Identifying leaders for local/regional organizations, Iowa Corn District Committees, and the ICPB and ICGA state boards.
  • Serving as lead Iowa Corn staff in support of Iowa Corn District Committees
  • Facilitating the formation of District Committees where necessary and assisting established District Committees in fulfilling the District Committee Charter  
  • Assisting in organizing any counties or regions that express interest in forming a local or regional organization.
  • Assisting local/regional organizations in planning events: golf outings, annual meetings, field events, product promotions, etc.
  • Helping local/regional corn grower organizations plan activities that qualify for grassroots activity funding, assisting with the requests for that funding, and documenting the distribution of funding and the evaluation of each activity.
  • Communicating needs of local/regional organizations to ICGA and ICPB.
  • Assuring that ICGA and ICPB directors are advised about local organization activities.
  • Assisting in the expansion of Iowa Corn student programming by establishing and maintaining relationships with college agricultural program advisors, student organizations, and FFA chapters and advisors

Grassroots efforts  District Field Managers assist with developing and delivering grassroots programming in their assigned counties, by:

  • Assisting with round tables, farm forums, and other grassroots activities
  • Identifying and motivating grassroots members who are interested in grassroots legislative and promotional efforts
  • Planning, scheduling and managing a series of Iowa Corn Crop Fairs
  • Connecting with producers through associate members and the agribusiness network
  • Coordinating with partner organizations such as the Coalition to Support Iowa’s Farmers and the Iowa Renewable Fuels Association on targeted grassroots/consumer activities

Program Evaluation and Documentation – District Field Managers assist the Director of Grower Services in evaluating the effectiveness of the District Field Manager program by documenting activities and outcomes.  District Field Managers will track contacts made with various customers and any follow-up; fully document Grassroots Activity Fund Applications and distributions; summarize results of Crop Fairs, annual meetings, and other grassroots activities; and report regularly to the Director of Grower Services and to the Iowa Corn boards of directors.  Evaluation and documentation will require proficiency in the use of various computer tools, especially CAMMS, the association management system employed by Iowa Corn. 

Travel, Meeting, and Office Requirements – The duties and tasks listed above require significant travel (including occasional overnight stays) and commitment of time in a multi-county area of Iowa as defined in the territory assignment for each District Field Manager.  District Field Managers travel up to 80% of the time, especially during the winter meeting season, and provide excellent “customer service” to growers and local associations by being available evenings and weekends during peak seasons for statewide, regional, and local meetings and events.  District Field Managers will also spend an average of one day per week in the Johnston office in order to coordinate fully with other Iowa Corn staff members and to assist with overall program management.

Qualifications and Skills Required

  • The ideal DFM will have 3 or more years of membership solicitation, sales, or public relations experience.  A background in and/or extensive knowledge of agriculture is required.  Territory management experience is a plus.
  • The DFM will have a positive outlook on the future of agriculture and a strong interest in the corn industry.
  • The DFM must have strong communication/interpersonal skills and have the ability to relate to and interact with farmers, the general public and Iowa Corn staff.
  • The DFM must project a positive and professional image, and work with the highest degree of integrity.
  • The DFM must have strong organizational skills & command of Microsoft Office products and mobile technology, be a self-starter, and work day-to-day with minimum supervision.
  • A strong customer service attitude is essential.
  • The DFM must be willing and able to travel and must be available for numerous night and weekend commitments during peak seasons. Preference will be given to candidates living in the assigned district or willing to move into the assigned district. 
  • Knowledge of the corn industry and familiarity with the Iowa Corn Growers Association (ICGA) and the Iowa Corn Promotion Board (ICPB) is essential for job performance.
