Since 1927, Consumers Cooperative has served farmers, businesses, members, customers, and communities across Wisconsin with trusted energy products, convenience retail, and dependable service. Today, the member-owned cooperative operates in 19 communities and includes bulk petroleum, propane sales and distribution, 18 convenience stores, two car washes, and multiple rental properties. As Consumers Cooperative approaches its 100th year, the Board of Directors is seeking an accomplished, people-focused executive to lead the organization into its next chapter.
THE OPPORTUNITY
Reporting to a five-member, member-elected Board of Directors, the Chief Executive Officer will provide overall strategic and executive leadership for Consumers Cooperative and its approximately 170 employees. The CEO will be accountable for organizational performance, financial strength, operational excellence, talent and culture, risk management, member value, and long-term growth. The successful candidate will bring sound business judgment, strong financial acumen, a collaborative leadership style, and the ability to build trusted relationships with employees, members, customers, key business partners, the Board, and the communities Consumers Cooperative serves.
The CEO position is based in Sauk City, Wisconsin, approximately 25 minutes northwest of Madison. The community offers exceptional recreational, cultural, and civic opportunities, along with an excellent school district.
KEY LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES
Risk, Safety & Compliance: Ensure effective safety, compliance, insurance, credit, contract, cybersecurity, and enterprise risk-management practices are in place to protect employees, members, customers, and Cooperative assets.
Strategic Leadership & Board Partnership: Partner with the Board of Directors to establish long-term direction, translate strategy into clear priorities, and provide timely, transparent information that supports sound governance and decision-making.
Member, Customer & Community Relationships: Serve as a visible and respected leader of the Cooperative, maintaining strong relationships with members, customers, employees, business partners, and the communities Consumers Cooperative serves.
Financial Performance & Capital Stewardship: Lead budgeting, forecasting, capital planning, cash flow, patronage/equity planning, and performance management to strengthen profitability, balance-sheet measurements, and long-term member value.
Operational Excellence: Provide executive oversight across all business units and locations, ensuring consistent standards, disciplined execution, strong inventory and asset management, effective processes, and an exceptional customer experience.
People, Culture & Talent Development: Build, develop, and retain a high-performing team and engaged workforce. Establish clear expectations, strengthen accountability, develop future leaders, and foster a culture grounded in safety, integrity, service, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
Growth, Innovation & Technology: Identify and evaluate opportunities to grow market share, improve efficiency, enhance the customer experience, and strengthen the Cooperative through new technologies, e-commerce, capital investments, partnerships, and other strategic opportunities.
IDEAL CANDIDATE
Consumers Cooperative is seeking a proven leader who can balance strategic thinking with practical execution. The strongest candidates will demonstrate:

Success leading a multi-location and/or multi-business organization with significant P&L responsibility.

Progressively responsible leadership experience, including senior executive, general management, or comparable enterprise leadership responsibility.

Strong financial and business acumen, including budgeting, P&L management, capital allocation, cash flow, and performance analysis.

Experience building, developing, and holding accountable high-performing teams.

A collaborative, approachable leadership style with the ability to build credibility and trust across a diverse employee base and a member-elected Board.

Experience leading change, improving processes, and implementing strategic plans and technology initiatives.

Sound understanding of safety, compliance, risk management, inventory, and operational controls.

Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal, and organizational skills, with a high degree of integrity and professionalism.
PREFERRED BACKGROUND
-
Experience in and strong understanding of retail energy, convenience store operations, petroleum, propane, or another related multi-site operating environment.

Knowledge of the cooperative business model and experience working with a board of directors, and understanding of the needs of agricultural and consumer members.

Bachelor’s degree in business, agriculture, operations management, marketing, finance, or a related field; equivalent relevant experience will be considered.

Familiarity with retail technology, POS systems, e-commerce, and enterprise business systems.
